Desperate Librarians ?

According to Tom Kertscher of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinal online (JSOnlinecom), six library administrators from the Waupaca, Wisconsin-area library system apparently had thought that a book-sale fundraiser was insufficient, so taking a hint from the Helen Mirren movie "Calendar Girls," they have put together a calendar and - you guessed it- in which the librarians appear nude behind strategically-placed books! Now, if this is not a "Hipper Crowd of Shushers", I don't know what is!!

A Hipper Crowd of Shushers

This NY Times article by KARA JESELLA, published July 8, 2007, has caused some controversy among the current internet librarian set....specifically because, once again, we are "fighting the librarian stereotypes." It is almost embarrassing how long society has been milking this one, and I think it's just about time that we accept that there are lots of young, hip, intelligent, savvy, trendy, and beer-drinking librarians around, who are NOT the exception to the rule..... We've been around a while....

Bookstores & Used Book Websites

Labyrinth Books, W112th St @Broadway, Manhattan:
If ever in need of some good browsing, try this place!
Located near Columbia University & St. John the Divine Church, it is a perfect place to pick up The Onion, grab some inexpensive coffee table books, or even get the latest and greatest in fiction and non-fiction, foreign translations, sociology, religion, history, music or art, or even...gasp!...the Classics! I have been going here for half a decade and will not shop elsewhere. The staff is supremely intelligent & helpful, and if they don't have it (rarely) they'll find it and try to order it for you. Deep discount book carts are outside all summer long, too!

Booklist Feature Article- April 1st

This month's (April 1st) Booklist Magazine has an interesting feature article by Will Manley on Libraries and Bookstores that touches some touchy issues:

http://www.booklistonline.com/default.aspx?page=show_product&pid=1913619
Or just Google his name & Booklist to read the full article. He asks some interesting questions, and raises some food for thought:
Q: Are public libraries weeding out the classics to be more like Barnes & Noble? While B&N is adding classics to pick up our slack??? Isn't it ironic?? What is a book's underlying value?? Should libraries be pragmatic in purchasing, or guiltless havens of "the good books" ?
What are your collective thoughts on this gem?? Let me know!
