End of Year TOP TEN Novel Round-Up!

The end of the year generally causes a great deal of lists: lists of the best songs, or movies, or perhaps books of the year. Random house has taken this a step further by creating several BEST BOOKS list of ALL TIME lists, by category, which I hope includes 2008. It's at the following link: http://www.randomhouse.com/modernlibrary/100bestnovels.html

While I have read a few of the list-worthy ones (and have a few on the back-burner as well!)
I am curious as to what librarians would choose as their "top ten" books of all time, since ther is just not enough time for a top 100.

***So I pose the question: What are our Librarian's top ten list of Best Books of ALL TIME? Tell me People!!!!

Blogger "Type-alyzer" website

So I went to this website to get my blog analyzed: http://www.typealyzer.com
My results are as follows:
INTP - The Thinkers
The logical and analytical type. They are especially attuned to difficult creative and intellectual challenges and always look for something more complex to dig into. They are great at finding subtle connections between things and imagine far-reaching implications.

The second half of the description was totally NOT me since I am often told that I Do, indeed, "get other people's needs" right and it is part of my success as a librarian.

So there, you're wrong, Myers-Briggs....humans just can't be quantified neatly!

Library Thing -Rock-n-Roll!

So I have been a member of Library Thing for a while, and I like it, but compared to Goodreads.com, I am not a fan. The purpose of Goodreads is eerily similar to LibraryThing, and both allow members to make reviews, create a profile, interact with others, etc. Check them both out if you can, and see which one you like better. I have made some few friends in my short time on Goodreads, and all were very nice. And Depending on the forums you join, you could be in for some great discussions with people of equal and very different mentality! Happy Reading!

GoodReads.com Friends, find me!

If anyone in Library-world is on Goodreads, please let me know. I have been on the site for a while, and while I haven't updated in a bit (since I have been writing a novel with NaNoWriMo.org instead of reading them), I want to get back in the swing.
So if you've read a good book, please contact me thru the blog or Goodreads. I've got Loving Frank almost completed, but loved the stories in the Starry Rift compilation and Kelly Link's Pretty monsters collection. Happy Reading!

Twitter! I just Tweeted!

Yes, fellow librarians, I took the plunge and i tweeted on Twitter. now, don't get me wrong, it's a cute concept but I felt all of nine years old and like the school-yard gossip when i wrote what i did.
Twitter is a LOT like the status updates on FaceBook but with no other content to fill out or games to play or pictures to view, it's a lot simpler. I don't see it having much value for me, but hey, I am nothing if not adventurous!
Take care...got to Tweet!

I Just Won NaNoWriMo !!!!

Yes, I have done what I thought was impossible and I have written a 50,000 word novel in less than 30 days time, and with little or no sacrifice in time to my demanding little daughter and big hubby! LOL! Go me. I can have some chocolate cake now! Whew!

My Newest Feature!

I just began a Bloglines account, and along with my Blogspot account, Myspace & Facebook accounts, Wetpaint account for our teen animanga club, and my email, I am ALL Pssword-ed Out! Sheesh...I am going to just use 'Frustrated" as my password from now on because I can't remember what goes with what. SO much for technology making my life less stressful!

NaNoWriMo.org !

Yes, people, I have taken the plunge and for the past...GULP!...25 days I have been writing my little heart out in an attempt to write my first novel through the NaNoWriMo.org site ( National Novel Writing Month, for the non-initiated!) I am up to 27,000 words and counting in 24 days, so wish me luck.
-- Hence the paucity of blogs in the past month or so!

Technology sites to try out...for free

Happy Holidays everyone!

I love JibJab and all their goofy goodness, so please try "elfyourself.com" for some photo fun and turn a picture of yourself into a dancing elf!

I am also waiting to try www.animoto.com which turns groups of photos into videos with crowd-pleasing music. If anyone has used it and has comments, please let me know!

twilight PARTY!

Yes....the movie TWILIGHT releases today and the excitement is palpable! Our own slice of the excitement begins at 3pm today with our TWILIGHT pre-party. Howling contest, book trivia, arm wrestling, red-velvet cupcakes,button-making, candy, oh my! I am personally on Team Jacob when it comes to characters for likeability, but I understand the allure of Edward. Frankly, I think it would be difficult to date a guy who sparkles in sunlight. I'd rather have a nice cozy-warm werewolf on a dark Forks evening, or NY evening....Hmmmm! Happy Holidays everyone! - RP

This month's School Library Journal (Nov. 08) has a quick little article on talking points to introduce Web 2.0 and common FAQs, called "Go With The Flow" by Michelle Boule

17+ things to do with your Digital Photos!

This website is my NEW FAVE!!!
Not only can you make trading cards out of family members, but you can turn your dog into a Picasso, your husband into a WANTED Poster, scrapbook on a scrap-blog, or create a music video, brochure or newsletter. I turned my daughter into a postage stamp, at right. So fun, I spent an hour playing around. Great gaga gift potential here. And something unique for the next party invite!

WLS Learns!

Well, I am once again participating in a web 2.0 project to expand my mind and learn. (Yippeee!)
When I did this same thing with other librarians two years ago, I was very successful, and really enjoy my blog, Roseann-the-librarian.blogspot.com; and
going on FLickr to see pictures from our Riverfront Programs:
(Just Google us, for instance, Yonkers Library); contacting teens
via MySpace about our AniManga Club (See:URL: myspace.com/animangaypl);
and working in Wikipedia to create the Yonkers Public Library Page, with John Favareau, the local Historian.
Hope everyopone enjoys this program. I found it very useful.
We also created Wikis at our library to keep track of favorite websites for Ready Reference and frequently-asked-for webpage documents, like hard to locate tax forms. The sky's the limit!
Just have fun.

GOODREADS.Com totally Rocks for Librarians!

Hello faithful readers!
I have been an active Member of Goodreads.com for several months now, and I am very happy to report that is has exceeded by expectations.
Not only do I have a great record of what I have read, but I have emailed with authors (even famous ones like Neil Gaiman), I have befriended new librarians in other states, and I have kept track of what my crazy friends are reading.
Finally, I have entered and finally won a free ARC copy of a new book to review for Goodreads audience members.
Please check out Goodreads, a social networking, email, bragging, hard-reading and fun website for those not afraid to read!

Games to play @ your library!

I just stumbled across a page of awesome internet games to while away the time between patron questions @ the library!
Check out: http://librarianwoes.wordpress.com/2007/08/20/favorite-games/
I am totally addicted to PUKI and his little exploding vampire head! Bleh! He-he!!

Teen Programming Woes@yourlibrary

Yes, we tried and failed again at getting teens interested in creating their very own web e-zine with help from the library....for free!! After four months of trying to recruit teens to contribute content (poetry, art, gossip, cd reviews, movie reviews, etc) we got NADA!
BUT...as I learned last night, one darling teen told her Parents she was @thelibrary at our Teen e-zine meetings every Thursday from 4-6pm--however, we stopped having meetings last October....needless to say, she used our library to dupe her parents! Who knew the poor library could be part of a teen conspiracy!
